Coronavirus concern hits more and more international sports events

The list of sporting events suffering from the coronavirus outbreak in China started on Wednesday with Skiing World Cup races in Yanqing being canceled and Olympic women’s football in Australia unsure on concerns about the safety of athletes.

Meanwhile, badminton, basketball, and tennis were among other sports whose governing bodies were rescheduling events, considering possible changes or managing the implications of the outbreak.

Skiing’s administration FIS also said that it took the “difficult decision” along side local organizers to cancel the Feb. 15-16 Alpine Ski World Cup — the primary official test event for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Earlier, the Asian Football Confederation said home matches of the four Chinese clubs on the primary three match days of the AFC Champions League are going to be rescheduled and played away.

The Chinese Football Association said four players including Yao Wei, Lyu Yueyun, Wang Shuang, and Li Mengwen would miss Olympic women’s qualifying tournament in Sydney next week after suffering from the coronavirus control.

Last week, China withdrew as hosts of the four-nation event, also featuring Australia, Thailand, and Taiwan before the AFC moved the matches to Sydney. However, the event suffered another blow as Australia’s football federation said it might postpone ticket sales while waiting for the advice of the authorities.

The International Tennis Federation has replaced the Oceania Group I event of the Fed Cup Asia (featuring teams from China, South Korea, Uzbekistan Taiwan, and Indonesia) from Dongguan to Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan.

But Kazakhstan has since declined to function a substitute host for the Feb. 4-8 event after suspending all passenger visit and from China.

Badminton’s administration BWF said that it might monitor implications associated with the outbreak which no decision had been made on the Feb. 25-March 1 China Masters in Lingshui.

Last week, the International Olympic Committee announced Jordan as host country of the 2020 Olympics boxing qualifiers for Oceania and Asia after an occasion in China’s Wuhan was canceled.

A Feb. 21-23 X-Games event in Chongli was postponed while a Feb. 6-9 qualifying tournament of women’s Olympic basketball was moved from Foshan to Belgrade.
